If he had, he would have been able to calculate all of the characteristics of the physical world without the need for the arcane methods of fluxions and fluents that has become known as calculus. Computing in the 1950s was too primitive to allow Leonard Jimmie Savage to navigate within the variability of the modern world and so he too was forced to develop a complex system of methods, now known as Bayesian statistics, to allow us to do so. But alas the very complexity of the methodology was at a different altitude than where most of us live. Sam Savage in his wonderful new book was able to compute the answers directly to the vexing problems that we all face without resorting to his father's methods. To use Savage's delicious phrase, using simple simulation methods we can understand directly "through the seat of our pants rather than the seat of our intellect."
