Business Plans
In order to be successful at starting up and running a business, you need to have a clear understanding of your business - both strengths and weaknesses. You also need to have a clear mission and goals as well as measureable objectives. Acquiring this understanding calls for developing and documenting a business plan. And to do this, you need to collect information about the business environment, your products and the marketplace you are targeting.
In today's economic environment, the survival and prosperity of your business venture hinges on your familiarity with the impact of technology on your marketplace and a thorough knowledge of your competition. Your success depends on your ability to identify those niches where you can be successful and the resources that you need.
You can find a recommended business plan outline here. The most important element is actually one of the last and should be performed immediately - the financial analysis. This will tell you whether your business idea is financially viable and whether it will be profitable in a suitable timeframe. You also need to understand how much startup capital (money) you'll need to get the business up and to keep it running until such time as you think it will become profitable.

Dave Ramsey is the king of financial fitness. In The Total Money Makeover, he focuses on debt. He repeatedly stresses that debt stinks. He encourages readers to cut up their credit cards and stop borrowing.
My husband and I have ascribed to the Dave Ramsey way of managing money for years. It is all common sense. Too bad the government has not read his books. Perhaps we should send each Representative and Senator a copy of this book.
Ramsey has a bold, to-the-point style; he tells it like it is. Ramsey's Christian faith shines through in his message. He purports a seven-step program for debt relief and shares his own experiences in hope of helping someone else.

Customer Review: Crazyman's Economics
In researching "Crazyman's Economics", I discovered the "dirty secret" of Wall Street that they rely on the fees and hidden costs as Loeper so thoroughly describes in "Stop the 401(k) Rip-off!." To Wall Street's brokerage houses, it doesn't matter if your 401(k) makes money or loses money, the fact is that as long as you have your money circulating, Wall St. makes money.
Loeper is correct that you need to take a greater look at your 401(k). Where I disagree with his book is that no matter how much you work to take the fees out, the problem is that the entire system is a giant con game. I would recommend that people take money out of their 401(k) and then they won't have to worry about hidden fees.
But Loeper's book is necessary reading to get a discussion started in this country about the role of Wall Street and the need for accountability for those who hold trillions of dollars of our money.

Customer Review: Early in "Planet Google" Stross points out that Google's income reached $4.2 billion in 2997 - 99% from the simple text ads that accompany its search returns. Readers also learn that 68% of Internet searches use Google. Thus, one suspects that at least some of Google's current new activities (eg. creating a digital library of all books, providing video search capability, server-supplied software and central data storage, translating between languages, voice-to-text capability) are a dangerous distraction from Google's main business (especially creating a digital library of all books - strongly fought by publishers and still lacking an income-generating plan, as well as the book.
Stross also is oblivious to the fact that eventually other Internet-search engines will catch up with Google, its search services will become a much-cheaper commodity, and the company's ability to reward and retain staff will precipitously decline. (It's called "product-life cycle," taught in every business school, and there are no long-term antidotes.) Further, Stross woefully short-circuits a key current and future problem - Google's data-center energy costs - undoubtedly because Google doesn't want to discuss it. Finally, Google's page ranking and Web-searching algorithms do not receive enough attention, while "open" vs. "closed" source coding receives entirely too much.
Nonetheless, "Google Earth" is mostly interesting reading. Google's power derives from the accidental discovery, two years after its founding, that plain text ads on its search pages produce enormous profits. Another key innovation was its requiring that ads be directly relevant to the search and ranking them according to projected income to Google (bid/click X probability of being clicked).
Google's search engine did not start out perfect - 1998 queries sometimes took ten seconds. In 1999 the search engine reviewed only 60 million sites, but the company then aggressively set a goal for 1 billion - at the time, AltaVista, its largest competitor, indexed only 150 million. (Google indexed 8 billion Web pages by 2004, the last year it made data available.) Another important Google advantage was gained by choosing to use low-cost standard PCs as servers, vs. competitors' choosing more expensive, specialized machines. Still another important decision was to avoid human involvement in the search output, contrary to Yahoo, which of course eventually found this approach...
