Business Plans
In order to be successful at starting up and running a business, you need to have a clear understanding of your business - both strengths and weaknesses. You also need to have a clear mission and goals as well as measureable objectives. Acquiring this understanding calls for developing and documenting a business plan. And to do this, you need to collect information about the business environment, your products and the marketplace you are targeting.
In today's economic environment, the survival and prosperity of your business venture hinges on your familiarity with the impact of technology on your marketplace and a thorough knowledge of your competition. Your success depends on your ability to identify those niches where you can be successful and the resources that you need.
You can find a recommended business plan outline here. The most important element is actually one of the last and should be performed immediately - the financial analysis. This will tell you whether your business idea is financially viable and whether it will be profitable in a suitable timeframe. You also need to understand how much startup capital (money) you'll need to get the business up and to keep it running until such time as you think it will become profitable.

The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2009 (Unofficial Guides)
by Bob Sehlinger, Len Testa
Amazon Price: $12.99
Customer Review: This is an awesome guide. I highly recommend to anyone who go to WDW to get this guide. This is our 1st visit to WDW. We got a 7 day pass, no hooper with water park. We were able to get to all the attractions of all the major parks by following the plan in this guide in beginning of June 2009.
Leading Change
by John P. Kotter
Amazon Price: $17.79
Customer Review: If you enjoy reading laundry lists, this is for you. I bought the audio version to listen to while communting, finally gave up in self-defense -- I was falling asleep at the wheel. Problems with this are: lack of real-life examples; pedantic, didactic style.
For better and more readable/listenable advice on implementing change, check out: "Good to Great" by Jim Collins; "Execution" by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan; "Who Says Elephants Can't Dance" by Lou Gerstner; "Winning" by Jack Welch.
Suze Orman's 2009 Action Plan
by Suze Orman
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: I have learned a few good tips from the book. I am not terribly in debt but I found the scenario questions and answers portion very helpful. It is a good resource!
Stock Investing For Dummies-
by Paul Mladjenovic
Amazon Price: $13.19
Customer Review: This book is written for those who have never traded a single share in their life. Basic practices are broken down and explained, covering all of the why's, how's, and waht if's. The author seems very well informed and credentialed. If you have already been trading/investing/speculating, and wish to brush up on principles or add new techniques to your repertoire, this book won't help you much....go for something a little more advanced.
Grant Writing For Dummies
by Beverly A. Browning
Amazon Price: $13.19
Customer Review: I am beginning a grant writing consultancy business and found this book enormously helpful. It is well documented, fabulously organized, touches on all the necessary points you will need to know about, and - most importantly to me - tells you like it is. Unlike some other books I read that seemed more like college textbooks, this book will really give you the information you need to operate in the real world writing real grants. The info is timely and accurate. It's a real must have desk reference for anyone involved in writing grants for nonprofits!
The Flaw of Averages: Why We Underestimate Risk in the Face of Uncertainty
by Sam L. Savage
Amazon Price: $15.61
Customer Review: In 1666 Isaac Newton invented calculus because he didn't have a computer. If he had, he would have been able to calculate all of the characteristics of the physical world without the need for the arcane methods of fluxions and fluents that has become known as calculus. Computing in the 1950s was too primitive to allow Leonard Jimmie Savage to navigate within the variability of the modern world and so he too was forced to develop a complex system of methods, now known as Bayesian statistics, to allow us to do so. But alas the very complexity of the methodology was at a different altitude than where most of us live. Sam Savage in his wonderful new book was able to compute the answers directly to the vexing problems that we all face without resorting to his father's methods. To use Savage's delicious phrase, using simple simulation methods we can understand directly "through the seat of our pants rather than the seat of our intellect." It is at sea level and we can all profit from its wisdom.
This is a great book and I recommend it to all.
Distress Investing: Principles and Technique (Wiley Finance)
by Martin J. Whitman, Fernando Diz, Daniel D'Aniello
Amazon Price: $44.10
Customer Review: Fernando Diz and Martin Whitman's Distress Investing is a practical tool to both beginner and experienced investors. Today's worldwide economic downturn has created attractive investments for distressed investors which makes this book a timely release. Distress Investing guides the reader step by step from defining distressed debt to valuation. Understanding creditor's rights and bankruptcy law allow distressed investors to capitalize on investments that are overlooked by individuals who are not knowledgeable of their securities' rights. In addition, it offers insight into many of Martin Whitman's strategies that he has employed during his long successful career of investment finance. Distress Investing is well written and provides excellent examples that make it an easy read. I would recommend this book to any individual looking to expand their knowledge base beyond equities.
Stop the Retirement Rip-off: How to Avoid Hidden Fees and Keep More of Your M...
by David B. Loeper
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: Unfortunately, I am at the age where retirement is looming in the future (okay, its still 12 years away - but still it feels pretty close). I have been reading up on retirement and more specifically on how to make every penny of my retirement money work for ME instead of for my broker, government or bank. This has proven to be quite the challenge as it seems as though every where you turn, someone is sticking their hand out wanting a chunk of your savings.
I was thrilled to discover Stop the Retirement Rip-Off. This is one of the best books I have read on this subject to date, especially since it takes a very step by step look at one of my huge pet peeves - hidden and not so hidden extra fees in the banking systems, governement or elsewhere.
In fact, using 5 specific steps (which are all clearly explained in this book) author Loeper encourages us by telling us that WE ARE responsible for our money and that it is up to us to stay informed and on top of our money - and that by following his 5 steps and keeping our eyes open and keeping informed - we can avoir being ripped-off when it comes to our retirement.
This book is written for the lay person, there are no fancy financial terms here and the steps, suggestions and recommendations are all very logical and easily done.
I highly recommend this book - it is very well worth the investment.
