Growing Businesses

Growing businesses have a huge appetite for working capital which they need to help them grow. There are 6 major sources of capital for a growing small business:

Working Capital - merchant advances, micro loans, business credit cards, equity loans, credit score loans

Commercial Financing - asset lending, account receivable factoring, purchase order financing, inventory loans

Equipment Financing - equipment leasing, software financing, cash-out sale leasebacks, medical leasing

Small Business Loan - SBA small business loans, economic development loans, start-up loans, lines of credit

Equity Investments - venture capital, investment banks, SBIC government investors, mezzanine funding

Commercial Mortgages - commercial real estate lenders, mortgage bankers, construction loans, hard money loans

Working Capital or the measure of a company’s ability to pay off its short term debt is the difference between current assets and current liabilities.

To apply for a loan, you'll need a business plan, a credit report and some downpayment capital.

Successful QuickBooks Consulting: The Comprehensive Guide to Starting and Gro...
by Michelle L. Long
Amazon Price: $24.95
Customer Review: I just started working with QuickBooks about a year ago and just love it. Prior to working with QuickBooks, I worked for a large corporation for 18 years. I finely figured out that I did not want to work with this large of a company any longer and wanted to learn something new and exciting.

That being said, I wish what I have learned in this passed year I could have known 20 years ago. Reading Michelle's book has inspired me to continue learning.

Her book is so friendly, making things easy to understand, without all the 'techie' politics. The one part I most liked was how a client will call and says they have a two second question for me... Boy she sure is right about the fact that there is no such thing as a two second question!

I'm hoping Michelle will write another book in the near future. I will be watching and will be one of the first to buy it.

Thanks Michelle for helping me understand how to be successful with a QuickBooks Consulting business!

The Program Management Office: Establishing, Managing And Growing the Value o...
by Craig J. Letavec
Amazon Price: $47.96
Customer Review: I was browsing the local Half Price Books and noticed a book titled "The Program Management Office: Establishing, Managing And Growing the Value of a PMO" by Craig J. Letavec.

Seeing as how I have an interest in Project Management, Program Management and PMO's...and I'd never seen this book before so I thought I'd pick it up and read it.

Not a bad book at all. There is good advice for people at all levels of PMO experience.

The book seems to be targeted at people/organizations who are trying to build a PMO. There are some chapters targeted at managing the PMO once it's been created, but you'll have to wait till the end of the book to find them.

As mentioned, the majority of the book covers the creation of a PMO and what topics need to be considered while setting up your program/project office. When considering the creation of a PMO, the author states that you should first consider your initial PMO "Model". In other words, how will your PMO be organized and managed? Will the PMO be the central office for all project management functions...or will it be a project management knowledge center for the organization? The author provides three PMO "models": Consulting, Strong and Blended. These models are basic PMO models, but are effective when trying to determine how the PMO will fit into the organization. The book provides pros/cons of each model, how the models would fit into organizations and what processes and tools are needed to make these models work.

In addition to the three PMO models, the author provides a basic overview of the PMO as Project Standard Bearer and Knowledge Management Center. The Knowledge Management Center was most interesting to me since this is the area that I believe organizations and PMO's fail. Many people have studied project management processes and standardized these processes...project governance is a field that many people have a good grasp on. Knowledge management in the world of projects, on the other hand, is still fairly immature with lots of interesting topics to explore.
